Humboldt State students enjoy an extraordinary college experience, taking small classes taught by professors who know them by name. They live and learn in one of the world’s most beautiful places—near ancient redwood forests, mountains and beaches. We are located 275 miles north of San Francisco in the town of Arcata, which is recognized as one of the West’s best college towns.
Outside the classroom, our students enjoy a rich campus life. They are involved in more than 180 campus clubs and have access to a state-of-the-art recreational facility. Each year, CenterArts brings nationally recognized performers and speakers to campus, and we have 12 NCAA Division II athletic teams.
Students find the area rich with nature yet only a couple hours drive from San Francisco, the USA’s Silicon Valley. Known for technology startups. Water recreation is a popular outdoor activity on the North Coast and with good reason. In addition to a multitude of rivers, lakes and creeks, Humboldt Bay serves as an excellent location for kayaking, canoeing and boating.
One of six rivers in our region, the Mad River flows through Trinity and Humboldt Counties before meeting the Pacific Ocean. Here you’ll find several popular fishing and swimming holes just minutes from campus. A half-moon-shaped cove with a protected, sandy beach makes College Cove a favorite of HSU students. Located just north of Arcata in the tiny town of Trinidad, the beach is also known as a choice spot for nude sunbathers during the summer months.
